Photobooth offers unique gift-giving options this season

Photobooth, the world’s only tintype and Polaroid portrait studio and gallery, is fast becoming one of San Francisco’s hot spots. The brainchild of Polaroid photographer Vince Donovan and tintype portraitist Michael Shindler, Photobooth is a portrait studio, camera workshop and retail store all rolled into one. With gift certificates available for everything, Photobooth offers some of the most unique gift-giving options this holiday season.

Portraits

Tintype photography is one of the earliest versions of the art. A unique negative is backed by a 4-by-5-inch aluminum plate to produce a one-of-a-kind positive image. Solo sittings are $50. Couples packages require advance booking and include one portrait of each person and one to two couple portraits for $200. Stainless ferrotype portraits, a variation on the tintype theme, are $80. Photobooth can also produce fine-art reprints and enlargements of favorite portraits.

Workshops

Plastic-camera artist Christine Zona demonstrates how to get the most out of funky cameras such as the Holga, Diana, Fisheye and every Lomo imaginable. Plastic Camera Bootcamp $150

Want to resurrect that dead $3 thrift store Polaroid camera? Never fear: Vince Donovan teaches how to pick apart and reassemble a junked Polaroid in a workshop class. Polaroid Rescue Workshop $150

Photographer Chloe Aftel leads this workshop utilizing a variety of Polaroid cameras to teach how to create stunning still-life images. Still Life Workshop $250

Refurbished Polaroids

This gorgeous Polaroid Colorpack with case is just one of the many refurbished Polaroid cameras in Photobooth’s retail shop. $100

Fun Cameras

Photobooth’s shop has a variety of cameras — including a wide selection of Lomo cameras such as the Holga, Diana and Fisheye, which are just as fun to use as they look. The new Lomokino Super 35 allows people with 35 mm film to create their own movies. Fun overload. Prices vary
