A leak from a gas main shut down several blocks in downtown San Francisco Thursday evening after a PG&E crew damaged its own pipeline, just outside its corporate office.
According the utility company spokesman Jana Morris, crews helping with distribution lines to the Transbay Terminal damaged a 2-inch fitting that connected to a 16-inch line at Mission and Beale streets around 7:15 p.m.
An estimated four commercial customers were affected by the damage and gas was reported to be spewing into the air.
Traffic was diverted around the area and numerous businesses were evacuated.
The gas was shut off by 8:40 p.m., according to Morris. PG&E crews remain on scene to repair the pipe and restore service to customers.
PG&E headquarters are located at 77 Beale Street.
