Pentagon begins voluntary evacuation from Japan

The Defense Department has authorized a voluntary evacuation Thursday of family members of U.S. military stationed Honshu, Japan as radiation levels escalated.

According to reports, the number of evacuees is in the thousands.

The Pentagon's measures apply only to those families living on Japan's main island of Honshu, where the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is located. The Pentagon has suspended all military family travel to the island.
