About 10:10 a.m., a passenger in a vehicle going with the flow of traffic westbound on Interstate 80 at the incline of the eastern span “jumped from the car, fell to the roadway, and then another vehicle that was traveling behind them tried to avoid him but unfortunately hit him,” California Highway Patrol Officer Mike Ferguson told The San Francisco Examiner.
The victim suffered lacerations and some internal injuries and was transported to a local hospital, Ferguson said. He was in stable condition in the intensive care unit, Ferguson said.
Both vehicles pulled over on the shoulder of the highway. The driver of the van that hit the victim does not face any charges. Officers are continuing the investigation and would not comment on what may have led the passenger to exit the vehicle.
