Paving work causes water main to burst

Vibrations from nearby paving efforts caused a jet of water to spray spectacularly into the air in the Lower Haight neighborhood on Wednesday afternoon.

The 16-inch water main was repaired less than an hour after it sprung a leak at 1:20 p.m. at Waller and Steiner streets, according to San Francisco Public Utilities Commission spokesman Tyrone Jue.

Vibrations from nearby paving operations broke a 2-inch air valve that balanced water pressure in the main, causing the leak, according to Jue.
