Parking bonanza on New Year's Day

This is your yearly reminder that New Year’s Day is a parking free-for-all.

On Friday you don’t have to dodge meter maids, you can park wherever signs say there’s supposed to be street cleaning and you don’t have to move your car after a couple of hours from non-metered curbsides.

You can even park around the waterfront for free, too. Those meters usually run seven days a week.

You just can’t get crazy and park in a red zone or block a driveway, unless you like the idea of ringing in the new year at the impound lot. Also, any streets with seven-day-a-week signs will be enforced.

Christmas and Thanksgiving are the only other days you get free parking.
