M. Night Shyamalan’s sci-fi flick “After Earth,” starring Will Smith and his son, Jaden, is being destroyed by critics.
“The scorched earth left behind by ‘After Earth’ is sure to leave a scar on everyone involved,” the Los Angeles Times wrote.
Here’s an idea: if you want to make a sci-fi movie that is successful, don’t put the word “Earth” in the title, i.e., “Battlefield Earth.” Actually, lots of folks are making comparisons between this father-son film and that Scientology-themed flop of yore. Vulture points out that the father “audits” his son throughout the movie, and The New York Times draws comparisons between the plot and “Dianetics.”
Smith has repeatedly denied being a Scientologist, despite making donations to the church and founding a private grade school that has been accused of peddling L. Ron Hubbard philosophies.
