Alley cat: When the folks at Out of Sight's world headquarters troll the side streets of San Francisco for each week's featured act, nearly every single person we encounter ecstatically endorses a visit to Bix, the sultry supper club that's dished up designer food with a heaping side of swank for what seems like forever. Not that you'd be able to tell from the rather unassuming brick façade that fronts the restaurant. But once you step through the front door, consider yourself transported into an entirely different realm of time and place. Decked out in deco and boasting a first-class staff, it’s little wonder why even the coolest cats in town can't help but be swept up in Bix's enduring atmosphere and decadent cuisine.
Cool daddy: The man responsible for bringing Bix to life (and thus giving Gold Street a purpose in life) is Doug Biederbeck. The tables turned for the former University of Oregon English major while crumbing the tables of a French bistro. Inspiration struck. Instead of working for the man, why not be the man? A question Biederbeck easily resolved when he opened Bix and experienced immediate success, which then led to a succession of edible victories, including Florio and the Ferry Building's MarketBar, his other eating enterprises.
Star power: Besides swooning over the live jazz ensemble or the beatific mahogany bar that can sometimes be more crowded than the dining room, people from all ends of the earth fawn over the decadent cuisine that alights the restaurant's crisp linen-topped bistro tables. And really, how can one not nearly faint over the potato pillows served with Crème Fraîche and American Sturgeon Caviar, or for that matter, the very famous Chicken Hash á la Bixfirstname.lastname@example.org
