Other cities help couples rush to altar

Lesbian-rights activists Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon weren’t the only Bay Area same-sex couple to say "I do" Monday.

In Oakland, Mayor Ron Dellums said he was "extremely pleased and honored" to be asked to officiate 18 weddings for gay and lesbian couples at City Hall beginning at 6 p.m.

Sonoma County had two same-sex marriages scheduled Monday in addition to 17 other ceremonies.

The rest of the Bay Area’s counties said they plan to begin performing same-sex marriage ceremonies today. Contra Costa County Clerk Steve Weir and his partner of 18 years, John Hemm, will be the first gay couple to tie the knot there, Weir said.
