  • A deadly accident at this intersection this morning has shut down a roadway oft-used by morning commuters.

A 17-year-old boy is dead and his mother and sister were critically injured after a speeding Mercedes rear-ended their mini-van at Pine and Gough streets during this morning's commute, authorities said.

Witnesses thought the elderly female driver of the Mercedes could have been driving up to 80 mph before the 6:55 a.m. collision. The woman reportedly sped through multiple stoplights while on Pine Street when she crashed into the mini-van, which had been stopped at a red light, police said. Even more people were injured when the mini-van struck another vehicle.

The driver of the Mercedes was not seriously injured in the crash. Police Chief Greg Suhr told reporters he didn't know why the woman was speeding.
