Tom Martin, Bay Area resident and co-founder of American Showplace Productions, has produced Oktoberfest by the Bay for the past 10 years. The 11th annual event at Pier 48, running Thursday through Sunday, will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Munich Oktoberfest. For more information, visit www.oktoberfestbythebay.com.
If it’s Oktoberfest, why celebrate in September? It all began when Prince Ludwig was getting married to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen 200 years ago. The announcement led to a tremendous party, which began on the very same fairgrounds where Oktoberfest is held in Munich now.
How did Oktoberfest by the Bay start? It all came together at Schroeder’s on Front Street with my business partner and college roommate, Dan McPhee. We wanted to create an authentic event to mimic our experience at the Munich fest.
What can people expect when they attend? From start to finish, you can expect really high-quality beer, authentic food, Bavarian music and dancing.
What’s the best part of Oktoberfest by the Bay? What I like the most is that we try to do it exactly like Munich. Also, a portion of the event benefits One Brick, which is our fantastic designated charity.
