Get those costumes ready, “Star Trek” fans.

After a three-year hiatus, the Official Star Trek Convention returns to the Bay Area.

Scheduled to land this weekend at the Hyatt Regency in Burlingame, the star-studded event includes a headlining Saturday appearance by the original and legendary Captain Kirk, William Shatner, and a Sunday showing from “Star Trek: Voyager’s” Seven of Nine Jeri Ryan.

The star lineup, which also celebrates the 20th anniversary of “Deep Space Nine” and combines celebrities from the original “Star Trek” with those from “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Deep Space Nine” and various other television and movie incarnations, also includes Friday appearances by John de Lancie (Q), Tim Russ (Tuvok), Michael Aron (Jack London) and Suzie Plakson (Female Q, K’Ehleyr), who will be made up as K’Ehleyr in an onstage appearance by Klingon expert makeup artist John Paladin.

Paladin also will transform a thrilled fan into his or her favorite alien as the entire audience watches.

Gary Berman, co-CEO of Star Trek Convention producer Creation Entertainment, says about 20 percent of the audience arrives in costume. “They really add to the fun of the event,” he says. “Some of their work is truly extraordinary and a joy to grab pictures with.”

In addition to celebrity appearances — also featuring James Darren (VIC), Lee Meriwether (Losira), Max Grodenchik (Rom) and Aron Eisenberg (Nog) on Saturday and Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker), Mirina Sirtis (Counselor Troi), Robert Beltran (Chakotay) and Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) on Sunday — the show promises behind-the-scenes presentations, costume and trivia contests, auctions of unique collectibles, special salute videos and previews of upcoming sci-fi TV shows and motion pictures.

A special exhibit hall boasts “Star Trek” and sci-fi collectibles, as well as autographs and photo ops.

Above all, Berman says, the event is a celebration and honoring of Gene Roddenberry’s philosophy of inclusion of all: “The world is so messed up now, that Gene wondered how we would ever accept a different type of life form that statistically must be out there. We should all adopt Gene’s humanist philosophies. We’d be ever so much further — no war, no hunger, no lack of education. Sounds good, no?”
