An off-duty San Francisco police officer shot a motorist early Sunday morning after an argument over a vehicle collision escalated, police said.

The officer and the shooting victim were reportedly involved in a collision on Interstate 280 just after midnight, Officer Albie Esparza said. The two vehicles left the freeway and stopped at Bayshore Boulevard and Jerrold Avenue to exchange information.

The exchange of information turned into an argument that escalated when the officer pulled out her gun and shot the other motorist, Esparza said. The victim was grazed in the lower body, he said.

The incident is being investigated by homicide and Internal Affairs and the officer was put on paid routine administrative leave.
