Thirty-six-year-old Oakland resident Magdalena Boulet will be running in the elite category at today’s ING Bay to Breakers.
How long have you been running ING Bay to Breakers? I’ve only done it a couple of times. I always wish I could do it every year, but sometimes after other races, especially spring marathons, there’s not enough time in between the two.
How did you get in to marathon running? I graduated from Cal in 1997 and was mostly a 5K runner in college. I was always inspired by people that run marathons, and I always felt long distance was my strength. I also fell in love with the workload required to be competitive at that level.
What’s your fastest marathon time? Two hours, 26 minutes.
What do you do to train for Bay to Breakers or any race? I run twice each day, every day. We live in an area where the training is fantastic. I live in the East Bay and the Oakland hills are full of fire roads and regional parks with many trails, I also use Cal facilities to train and of course on roads.
Any advice for people just running for the first time? Running is an amazing sport. You can do it anywhere at anytime need and you need very little equipment. There are no excuses. Start slowly. If you do it properly, it will feel great, and you’ll never stop doing it.
