The Oakland Raiders reportedly want Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen to serve as their next head coach, according to an ESPN.com report.
Philadelphia offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg will finish as a runner-up in the search, according to a source in the report.
He remains in the running for the Indianapolis Colts head coaching position after sources say he and fellow candidate Mike Tice were told the Raiders made their selection.
Raiders officials and Allen are meeting on Tuesday to see if an agreement can be reached. His background as a defensive coach would put him in good, though rare, company with the Raiders.
John Madden, the last head coach in Oakland with defensive coaching on his resume, led the team’s linebackers when he was hired by the Raiders in 1969.
The Raiders recorded an 8-8 record for the second straight season in 2011, and are seeking their first winning season since 2002.
