It’s true that earlier this year Mayor Gavin Newsom had floated the idea of increasing The City’s transfer tax – again – as a way to help pay for affordable housing.
But that was then and this is now, and now with San Francisco limping out of a recession makes it a less-than-desirable time to raise taxes, the mayor says. As for the about-face? Newsom’s spokesman Tony Winnicker shut down any talk that his boss was thinking about his campaign for statewide office when he decided he would support no new taxes.
In fact, Winnicker said the mayor never supported the concept of an increased transfer tax – he merely talked about it with stakeholders.
“Having a discussion about increasing taxes is a far cry from supporting it,” Winnicker said.
