Lieutenant Governor-elect Gavin Newsom is planning a Sunday afternoon announcement to name The City’s next district attorney, who will serve until the November election.
Attorney General Kamala Harris vacated the position when she was sworn in Monday. Newsom stalled taking oath to his new position to influence the interim mayoral appointment, and is now choosing a new DA. He is scheduled to be sworn in Monday.
However, legal scholars have questioned whether he is still the mayor of San Francisco since the Board of Supervisors on Friday voted 10-1 to appoint City Administrator Ed Lee as interim.
The new board is scheduled to vote Lee’s appointment Tuesday, after Newsom takes the oath.
The swearing-in of the new district attorney is expected to happen Sunday afternoon.
