Newsom: College students dig me

Only hours after a Field Poll showed Mayor Gavin Newsom largely trailing Attorney General Jerry Brown in the Democratic primary, his campaign released a statement Thursday morning highlighting the mayor’s popularity among high school and college students in the state.

More than 4,000 students statewide have joined Students for Newsom, which are essentially student-run mini-campaigns that include members from more than 50 state colleges, the Newsom campaign said. Nine hundred high school students joined the cause, it noted.

The campaign statement was consistent with the latest Field Poll. While Newsom, 41, trailed Attorney General Jerry Brown, 71, by 20 points in the poll, he was more popular among younger voters ages 18 to 39.

And it’s not just because the mayor is youthful and announced his candidacy on Twitter. Newsom has been loudly opposing cuts and fee hikes for the state’s universities -- students sure as heck won’t argue with that.
