Monthly rate increases for San Francisco garbage customers are set to take effect today.

The changes approved Tuesday mean households with three 32-gallon bins for trash, compost and recycling will see their Recology bills rise $6.17, from $27.91 to $34.08.

Customers can save money by switching to a 20-gallon trash bin and putting more refuse in the compost and recycling bins. That monthly rate will be $24.68. Recology said it created this option as part of The City's goal of zero waste by 2020.

Other changes include an expansion of Recology's bulky-item pickup service. More information, including scheduling pickups, can be found at www.recologysf.com.
