The new electric vehicles have “been performing very well” since they were launched on Dec. 18, said City CarShare member experience director Brent O’Brien, although there are “probably a lot of people who are not familiar with this technology.”
The Kezar Stadium pod previously had five regular gasoline cars, but two were replaced to add the five Toyota Prius and Ford C-Max Energi plug-in vehicles. Introducing more plug-in hybrids advances City CarShare’s goal of converting half of its fleet to sustainable vehicles by 2015.
“It is very difficult to find suitable locations or charging infrastructure, so this is good for our fleet,” said O’Brien of the pod at Kezar, adding it is “one of our most popular locations.”
Another hurdle is cost – plug-in vehicles are 15 to 20 percent more expensive than regular cars, he said.
San Francisco now has 29 electric vehicle charging stations on Recreation and Park Department property and 81 citywide. City CarShare plans to add 27 to 35 more alternative or plug-in vehicles to its entire fleet this year.
