With new ownership in Los Angeles, the Giants-Dodgers rivalry is heating up and now fans can relive the first 55 years of the teams' clash on the West Coast with a quick trip to the bookstore.
Joe Konte's recently published book, "The Rivalry Heard 'Round the World" chronicles the history between the Giants and Dodgers on the West Coast, from the first season in 1958 to last year's World Series run by the Orange and Black. The book rehashes the clubs' roots in New York and recounts the most memorable moments out West, including the 1962 best-off-three playoff, the 1965 dustup between Juan Marichal and John Roseboro at Candlestick Park and Steve Finley's walkoff grand slam in 2004.
"There's a couple of books that look at the rivalry, but there's nothing that focuses on the West Coast rivalry to the extent that I did," Konte said.
Konte was inspired to write about the rivalry while attending a game at Candlestick in 1998 celebrating the first game between the Giants and Dodgers on the West Coast.
The Marin Independent Journal news editor recalled the first Giants game he attended on Sept. 1, 1958, as he sat along the right-field line watching the characters from his childhood parade around the stadium in convertibles.
"I thought, 'I have the skills to try to nail this down — to tell these stories,'" Konte said. "It all started happening right there."
For the next nine or so years, Konte, a former sports editor, spent his free hours in The City's main library reading microfilm of boxscores and game stories found in The San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles Times.
Konte said the project is labor of love that combines his two passions: journalism and baseball.
"For me it was a real treat going back and looking up all the boxscores, game stories and re-reading some of the great sportswriters over the years that covered this rivalry," he said.
With the Giants winning two World Series titles in three years and the Dodgers reinvigorated by new ownership, Konte said the rivalry is as hot as ever as the teams prepare to play their 1,000th game on the West Coast in 2014.
"The 2012 season was the most pivotal year of the rivalry since the Giants first came here in '58," he said.
Konte will be making a speaking appearance at Books Inc. in the Marina on Oct. 3 to discuss the book and the historic rivalry.
