A scaled-back Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in Golden Gate Park this weekend is music to the ears of nearby residents and business owners.
It’s the third year that the concert in the park, which raises money for the Recreation and Park Department, is being held. In the past two years, it has drawn big-name acts such as the Dave Matthews Band and Pearl Jam to Speedway Meadow and the Polo Field. The festival drew about 100,000 fans in 2008 and about 78,000 in 2009.
This year, however, event organizer Another Planet Entertainment chopped Friday off the lineup because it had a hard time nailing a big-time headliner such as Radiohead, which played Friday in 2008. But, the monetary move in the down economy has surrounding neighbors glad rush hour won’t be slammed.
"You’re talking about thousands and thousands of additional people traveling on Geary [Boulevard]," Geary Merchants Association President David Heller said. "Last year, it was a mess."
The complaints reported for illegally parked vehicles and noise numbered 215 for last year’s Friday show, according to event organizers. That was nearly twice the amount of calls on Saturday or Sunday.
Allen Scott, vice president of Another Planet, said the only qualms the company had about canceling Friday is the possibility of less ticket revenue.
"We’re saving on the labor and the talent ... but of course your revenue potential is down," Scott said.
Ray Holland, president of the Planning Association for the Richmond, said residents are happier their neighborhood will be quiet Friday night.
"Other than the inevitable noise complaints on Saturday and Sunday, I think this year should run smoothly," Holland said.
Another Planet is still paying the Recreation and Park Department what it agreed to: $1,050,000 rent and $1 for every ticket sold, a rate that will increase next year.
The last cloud hanging over the event is the weather.
"You’re not going to be happy," said meteorologist Diane Henderson of the National Weather Service. "It’ll be in the mid-60s all weekend. Last year, it got up to the 90s."
