Mirkarimi sees Target as suitable replacement

A meeting Wednesday may reveal the next steps for Target following rumors the major retailer could rent the vacant Mervyn’s building on Geary Boulevard or open up shop at the Metreon downtown.

The community meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of what used to be the Mervyn’s building at 2675 Geary Boulevard.

Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi said despite concerns of congesting traffic on Masonic Avenue between Geary Boulevard and Haight Street, the big-name retailer is eyeing a valid location.

“I think our choices are limited given the economic downturn,’’ Mirkarimi said, and “with sizable vacant commercial real estate I highly doubt that anything else will be able to replace (Mervyn’s).”
