Mayor Gavin Newsom, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, and state and federal officials will be on hand Wednesday for the groundbreaking of a second major construction project on the $1 billion Doyle Drive rebuild.
The aging, seismically unstable southern expanse to the Golden Gate Bridge is in the midst of a complete rebuild, with a new replacement — called the Presidio Parkway — set to be finished by 2014.
On Wednesday, officials will celebrate the latest step in the overhaul — the start of construction on the southbound portion of the Battery Tunnel, a key underground passage of the new Presidio Parkway. Funding for the new project comes entirely from the federal stimulus program.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at McDowell Avenue in the Presidio.
