Mayor Ed Lee surprised, even shocked, members of the Board of Supervisors and reporters when he opened up his remarks Tuesday about a proposed $248 million road repair bond he is introducing for the November ballot.
“I’m glad you are all here. I did want to make a special announcement this morning,” Lee said, as silence filled the Mayor’s Office at City Hall. “I am announcing my candidacy,” he said, and then paused as a perfect performer before continuing with, “for being the lead of the pothole crew.”
There was laughter and applause throughout the room, including from mayoral candidate and Board of Supervisors President David Chiu who was likely more relieved than amused.
Lee’s joke comes as there has been rampant speculation that he would announce a run for mayor despite his continued insistence he will not run.
