Man robbed after responding to Craigslist ad for gift cards

Authorities in San Carlos are warning residents to watch out for online scams and setups after a man responding to a Craigslist ad for discounted gift cards was robbed at a Home Depot store.

Sheriff’s deputies were called to the store at 1125 Old County Road about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after a 40-year-old San Carlos resident said he was robbed of his cash and struck several times by the suspects, San Mateo County sheriff’s Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt said.

The victim said he had responded to a Craigslist ad offering discounted gift cards and had arranged a meeting to buy the cards at the Home Depot store, Rosenblatt said.

Once there, the victim told deputies, two men in their 30s arrived in a silver Lexus sedan before allegedly robbing him, Rosenblatt said.

The suspects were last seen traveling east on Brittan Avenue headed toward U.S. Highway 101. The car they were driving was reportedly stolen out of San Francisco, Rosenblatt said.
