Man in wheelchair struck at SF's most dangerous intersection

A man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a car in Hayes Valley early this morning, police said.

The crash occurred about midnight in the area of Market Street and Octavia Boulevard, an intersection known as one of The City’s most dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene, Officer Gordon Shyy said. Police are still investigating what led to the collision, Shyy said.

Data showing there were 56 collisions at the intersection between 2005 and 2011 has prompted several safety measures in recent years. Last month, a camera was installed at the intersection to bust drivers who make an illegal right turn from the intersection onto U.S. Highway 101.
