A homeless man and his dog he was walking in North Beach early this morning was attacked by a heartless, knife-wielding suspect, police Officer Albie Esparza said.

The 28-year-old victim was walking his dog about 1:30 a.m. in the area of Broadway and Kearny Street, Esparza said, when a man aged 25 to 30 attacked the dog for no reason, stabbing at it repeatedly.

A friend of the victim tried to intervene and also received cuts to his hand, Esparza said.

Both the dog and the friend were treated for injuries that were not considered life threatening.

No arrest has been made.
