A man was critically injured in a shooting in the Mission district on New Year's Day, police Sgt. Eric O'Neal said Thursday.

The 19-year-old victim was reportedly in the vicinity of 24th and York streets about 2:30 a.m. when he was shot in the chest, O'Neal said. Officers arrived at the scene on calls of shots fired and a notification from the department's ShotSpotter system. The victim was not at the scene when police arrived.

Police were given a description of the possible shooter, O'Neal said, but that description was not available Thursday morning. Police canvassed the area and detained a few people, one of which was arrested on an outstanding warrant, but it was unclear if any of those detained were involved in the shooting.

The victim was able to get to the hospital on his own somehow and is said to be in critical condition, O'Neal said. He was unable to talk to investigators.
