A man was arrested in connection with a stabbing in the Tenderloin on Tuesday, police Officer Gordon Shyy said.

The 35-year-old victim in the stabbing was walking southbound in the 200 block of Leavenworth Street toward Turk Street carrying a suitcase about 7:55 p.m., police said.

The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Raul Martinez of San Francisco, was reportedly walking the opposite direction, Shyy said. As Martinez passed the victim, he allegedly stabbed the victim in the back and fled the scene.

When police arrived, they reviewed video surveillance evidence from the crime scene and identified the suspect, who was found a short time later standing in front of a smoke shop in the 400 block of Larkin Street, Shyy said, where he was taken into custody.

The victim positively identified Martinez as the suspect, Shyy said. Martinez was booked on attempted murder charges.

The victim was taken to the hospital for his injuries, which were not life threatening.
