Man arrested in baseball bat assault in Portsmouth Square

A man was arrested after he reportedly assaulted a man sleeping in Portsmouth Square, police Sgt. Danielle Newman said.

The 63-year-old victim was asleep in the park in the 700 block of Kearny Street about 8:30 a.m. Christmas morning, when according to witnesses, the 46-year-old suspect walked up to the victim, picked up a wooden bat and struck the victim in the head before fleeing the scene.

A witness told police that the two men had had an argument the night before, Newman said. The witness woke up to the sound of the attack and saw the suspect walking away from the victim holding the bat.

Police searched the area and found the suspect nearby, Newman said. He was identified as San Francisco resident Selawin North, 46. He was charged with aggravated assault.

The victim was taken to the hospital for his injuries, which were not life threatening.
