A man was arrested Wednesday after reportedly breaking into an Oceanview residence and stealing a shovel, police Sgt. Eric O'Neal said.
A 47-year-old man was sleeping in his residence in the 100 block of Orizaba Avenue near Sadowa Street about 6:53 a.m. when he heard a loud crash from his bathroom, O'Neal said. The suspect reportedly broke in through the skylight in the roof.
The victim confronted the suspect and asked him what he was doing in his home, O'Neal said. The suspect reportedly said "I need help, please help me" before he locked himself inside the victim's garage.
The victim called police and the suspect left the garage with a shovel that belonged to the victim.
When police arrived, the suspect was standing out front of the residence with the shovel, O'Neal said. He seemed to police to be disoriented and confused. He resisted arrest and during the struggle dropped the shovel and a spray can that he was holding.
He was identified by police as 24-year-old Jerry Lyons of San Francisco. He was booked on charges of burglary in the first degree and resisting arrest.
