Thugs ambushed an 18-year-old man, beating him with a hammer, in the South of Market district Friday afternoon, police said.
Multiple suspects jumped the man at Natoma and Sixth streets around 4:45 p.m. He was struck in the back with a hammer, and punched and kicked all over his body, police said.
The suspects fled and the victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
There have been no arrests.
A motive for the attack was not immediately known. Nothing was stolen during the beatdown.
