When fans of the “Razor and Mr. T” show on KNBR (680 AM) tuned in on Wednesday, the familiar raspy voice often compared to Joe Pesci was absent.

Longtime personality Ralph Barbieri was let go by the station, according to reports, ending an era of Bay Area sports radio.

Barbieri had co-hosted the popular 3 to 7 p.m. show with Tom Tolbert since 1996 and was with the station 28 years.

Tolbert hosted the show solo on Wednesday.

“My partner of 15 years, Ralph Barbieri, is no longer with KNBR,” Tolbert said on the air Wednesday while fighting back tears. “It’s tough when you’ve been with somebody that long … 15 years.”

Tolbert went on to praise Barbieri for helping him get his radio career started and relished the pair’s chemistry.

In October, Barbieri revealed he’d been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2005, but continued to work.

“As much as we watch sports and see careers come and go, you are never really prepared for when they end,” Tolbert said on KNBR.
