Lisa Murkowski swears she's not illegally coordinating with Lisa Murkowski's campaign

Lisa Murkowski's lobbyist friends have launched a "Super PAC," called "Alaskans Standing Together," funded by 6-figure checks from Alaska Native Corporations, which are subsidized by the likes of Lisa Murkowski. I cover this racket in my column today, but the Sunlight Foundation yesterday noticed something odd about AST's campaign finance filings.

In brief, AST -- which can take unlimited corporate contributions for the sake of independent expenditures -- is required by law to swear it's not coordinating with any candidate. According to AST's filings, Lisa Murkowski is the AST official swearing AST isn't coordinating with any committee.

Bill Allison at Sunlight explains:

So who certified that Alaskans Standing Together is not making independent expenditures in cooperation, consultation or concert, or at the request or suggestion of, any candidate? Both forms list the name...Lisa Murkowski!

How could Murkowski certify their independence without cooperating or consulting, at the very least, with Alaskans Standing Together? Or did the group make a mistake (twice!) in its filings? Otherdisclosures have Barbara Donatelli, the organization's treasurer, do the certification.

I emailed Alaskans Standing Together to find out whether the name Lisa Murkowski appears there by mistake, but even if it is an error, it's probably not a great sign that the Super PAC didn't bat an eye giving the name of the candidate it supports as a witness to its independence.
