Span needs suicide barrier
Your paper is right to recognize the importance of the imminent funding for a Golden Gate Bridge suicide barrier.
For well over a decade -- since I was on the board of the bridge district -- I have worked to get a barrier in place. You cannot listen to the families' anguished second guessing about what they might have done differently without realizing that we, the leaders, can do something to prevent future pain.
Not only did I push for the barrier, but last year I wrote a bill signed by the governor that will require the builders of future bridges and similar structures to consider the need for suicide prevention before the structures are built.
I'm proud to have voted for the budget that allocated state funds to help get the barrier started. We need to start work on the barrier as soon as possible.
