Other ideas on shuttle fees
The shuttle proposal is officially a political football. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is there to be manipulated or ignored, as the case may be, like every other weak government regulator, and act as a sounding board.
The good news is that now that some sort of plan is in place, the companies have to run their pick of bus stops through the gauntlet of neighborhoods. Advocates on both sides of the curb-space wars should find a common cause in this particular case and effectively evict the bus services from neighborhoods as the specific stops are subject to the same public-notice and hearing requirements that they were for Polk Street and Potrero, and elsewhere.
Highways and a few major arterials are sufficient for the special transportation needs of large employers who choose to ferry their workers to San Francisco rather than pay for accommodations in their home districts.
The city attorney should invoke state law that has some teeth, in particular the schedule of fees in the California Mitigation Fee Act to calculate costs as it is done everywhere else.

Stop high-speed charade
Gov. Jerry Brown’s scheme to divert hundreds of millions of dollars from true cap-and-trade greenhouse gas-reducing projects to his legacy high-speed rail boondoggle must be stopped. High-speed rail is ruthless and currently using every available dollar to evict helpless Central Valley families through the power of eminent domain.
If it was your family that didn’t want to sell their farm, how would you feel being evicted for a train to nowhere that will never be built?
Independent Superior Court Judge Michael Kenny recently ruled that Proposition 1A promises to voters (i.e., private investors, business investment, environmental review, etc.) were all violated by the High-Speed Rail Authority, so no bonds could be issued. Using scare cap-and-trade money on a boondoggle train that won’t be built is done to kowtow to powerful labor unions and is wrong because helpless families are being evicted by a train — even Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg is against this farce.

Tunnel needs repairs now
Thank you for sounding the alarm on the aging tunnel that supplies San Francisco with water and power.
It is troubling that Mayor Ed Lee hasn’t addressed the situation. It is also disturbing to realize the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission knew about this problem when it spent more than $200 million on its new headquarters instead of repairing our vital infrastructure.
Ed Harrington, who ran the SFPUC, was given high praise from City Hall when he retired recently. Looks like he left us in a pickle.
