Lawyer accused of bribery, DUI in court

A Palo Alto attorney accused of trying to buy his way out of his third DUI arrest in Colma was due back in court Monday for a pre-trial conference.

Richard Chae, 37, allegedly offered a cop who pulled him over up to $35,000 to let him go on Feb. 26. According to police, he made three separate offers, first pulling $900 out of his pocket, then offering $5,000, and finally $35,000.

Chae, a patent attorney, was arrested on drunken driving and bribery charges, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Chae, whose previous DUI convictions occurred seven and eight years ago, is out of custody on his own recognizance, Wagstaffe said.
