Laurel Heights arson takes toilet tally to 31

It’s been three times in two weeks and four in a month, upping the number of portable toilet arsons in The City to 31 within about a year.

A loo was lit at Clay and Presidio streets around 10:20 p.m. Monday, the most recent inanimate victim of what could be the rekindling of The City’s serial arsonist.

No one was hurt and initial reports indicated surrounding property wasn’t damaged.

But the latest toilet fires - Sunday in the Marina, December 13 on Haight Street, and a couple weeks prior in Pacific Heights – came after a 10-month lull where 27 were lit between November 2008 and March.

They were mostly in the Russian Hill area and now the trend is spreading, said fire Lt. Mindy Talmadge.

The best advice Talmadge has for anyone responsible for a portable toilet is to lock it and keep it away from anything else flammable.
