A woman who was wrestling with a robber for her purse on Van Ness Avenue Monday night recovered her belongings with the help of at least two kind strangers, police said.
The 22-year-old woman had just hopped off the 38-Geary bus at Van Ness and Geary about 9:40 p.m. when she walked past a man who said hello to her, Sgt. Dennis Toomer said
She didn't know the man and kept walking, but he grabbed her purse, Toomer said.
"They ended up on the ground in a struggle for the purse," the sergeant said.
A man who was walking ahead of the woman heard the commotion, saw the crook taking off with the purse and chased after him. Another man hopped out of his car and gave chase. The man in the car got to the crook first and tackled him, Toomer said.
"The suspect threatened that he had a gun and then kept on running," Toomer said.
The thief got away, but the purse was recovered.
The victim reportedly complained of shoulder pain but refused medical attention. No arrest has been reported in the case.
