A 12-year-old boy’s martial arts lessons paid off last week after he freed himself from the grip of an allegedly drunken creep in Daly City, authorities said.
John Herman Dinetti, 27, faces misdemeanor battery and sex crimes charges in connection with the July 5 incident. He was scheduled for a pretrial conference in the Redwood City courthouse on Thursday.
According to Daly City police, the karate kid was walking home from a martial arts studio when Dinetti, who appeared drunk, crossed the street to confront him.
Dinetti grabbed the boy by the wrist and stated “come with me,” San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
The boy tried to pull his wrist away, but when that didn’t work he punched the suspect in the face with his free hand, Wagstaffe said. The punch freed the boy, who ran home to his mother, who called police, he said.
Police searched extensively for the suspect, who was found not long after the attack at a nearby motel.
Dinetti was “heavily intoxicated and had rambling, incoherent speech,” Wagstaffe said.
Dinetti was described as a “neighborhood drunk who has regular alcohol blackouts,” the district attorney said.
