It’s a mad, mad, mad world of maniacal musical mash-ups, where just about any artistic juxtaposition can be accomplished overnight via studio trickery.
But what, exactly, would happen if a couple of said iconoclasts actually got together for real in-the-flesh recording sessions?
The answer arrives Aug. 8 via an exclusive iTunes debut (physical copies available Aug. 12): “Watch The Throne,” the long awaited bow from Kanye West and Jay-Z, now collectively known as The Throne.
It’s available for pre-order now, and if you shell out for the deluxe edition (featuring bonus tracks like the Curtis Mayfield-assisted “The Joy”), you’ll get an instant download of “Otis,” which seamlessly incorporates Otis Redding’s “Try A Little Tenderness.”
Granted, it’s not like these longtime friends sat down in one studio for a protracted period of time. Instead, they recorded around the world, in Bath, Paris, London, Sydney, New York City, and even Abu Dhabi. It boasts production from the RZA, The Neptunes and West’s old collaborator Mike Dean, and stellar cameos from Beyonce (“Lift Off”), Mr. Hudson (“Why I Love You”), and Frank Ocean (“Made In America” and “No Church In The Wild”).
What could The Throne possibly be like on stage? The Bay Area will find out soon. Tickets go on sale Aug. 8 at www.livenation.com and www.ticketmaster.com for their Oct. 16 appearance at HP Pavilion in San Jose.
