Gavin Newsom, after arriving at San Francisco International Airport in San Francisco. Obama praised California's attorney general for more than her smarts and toughness at a Democratic Party event Thursday, April 4, 2013.

A spokesman for California Attorney General Kamala Harris says she remains a friend and steadfast supporter of President Barack Obama, a day after the president raised eyebrows by calling attention to her looks.

A White House spokesman says the president called Harris to apologize for commenting Thursday during a Democratic fundraiser that she is "by far, the best-looking attorney general."

Referring to the apology, Harris spokesman Gil Duran on Friday said the two had "a great conversation" and that Harris "strongly supports" the president.

Duran and Jay Carney, the White House spokesman, both noted that Harris and Obama have been friends for years.

During the Silicon Valley fundraiser, Obama also praised Harris as "brilliant" and "tough." Aides to Harris said she had no public appearances Friday and wouldn't comment personally.
