Jon Jang pays homage to Chinese-American teacher

Jazz composer-pianist Jon Jang, joined by saxophonist Francis Wong, trombonist/music director Wayne Wallace and guest vocalist Min Xiao Fen, perform "Unbound Chinatown," a work that pays homage to Alice Fong Yu, the first Chinese-American teacher hired by the San Francisco School District.

Jang’s works meld folk sounds with contemporary influences. The piece paints a portrait of Yu’s life as a community and political leader during the 1930s.

The free concert, part of the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, is Saturday at 1 p.m. in Yerba Buena Gardens, Mission Street between Third and Fourth streets, S.F. Admission is free. Call (415) 543-1718 or visit www.ybgf.org.
