Albert Gomez didn’t intend for his dream home to outgrow him.
The 38-year-old part-owner of his family’s firm, Gomez Ironworks, purchased the Hillsborough lot seven years ago and began to design a Spanish/Mediterranean retreat for himself. Six years ofplanning and building later, it’s finished, with the family touch.
The retractable glass doors above the indoor pool feature wrought-iron grape leaves and ivy surrounding a sunburst. The balconies have bowed wrought-iron barriers featuring birds of paradise.
"There’s a lot, a lot of detail everywhere," Gomez said. "I get to see people’s houses 10 times a day. I got a lot of ideas from that."
The detail is also evident in the non-iron elements, from the inset stone work on the concrete pillars to the wedding-cake plaster ceilings in the living and dining rooms.
But before he nailed down everything, the house started to expand. Gomez was his own general contractor, and had enough money from prior construction projects and loans to make his changing vision real. It started out at 6,000 square feet. It ended up at 11,000 square feet, including the 2,000-square-foot indoor pool. Somewhere in that process, Gomez decided it was just too much house for him. Instead of living in the five-story structure, he now wants to sell it — and fund the next project.
The home inspires enthusiasm in its realty company. "It’s surrounded by these unbelievable, majestic oaks," said Debbie Elowson of Coldwell Banker, who aids the listing agent. "It’s got unbelievable views of the San Francisco Bay."
