As folks gear up for the Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival on Oct. 15-16, they’ll do so with all of the festival info available at their fingertips. Joe Falcone, 52, along with Roy Salume and Kon Lovett, developed the smartphone app iPumpkin, which is now available for download via Apple.

Tell us a little bit about the app’s inception. It was kind of a long evolution. I did a demo app for a job interview. For whatever reason, this company wasn’t interested. And then we worked on a game. Then it just struck me.

How is the tight-knit Half Moon Bay community receiving the app? Without realizing it, people were attaching the label “hyperlocal” to us. That’s the hot thing these days. You’re focusing very intently and closely on the local community. If the label sticks ... fine.  You can’t do this without the support of the community. Having people behind you is essential.

What kind of need is there for an app like this? Given the era, people expect from their mobile devices to drill down and get more information about whatever they’re planning to do.

Will this app be available next year? Our plan is to branch out and do other community apps.
