Insecurity: Homeland Security workers turn to crime 

WHAT: During the past 15 months, at least 40 DHS employees and five contractors — mostly officers on customs or immigration enforcement — pleaded guilty to or were convicted of crimes, according to an inspector general’s report.

WHO: One Texas officer was sentenced to 20 years for conspiring to smuggle illegal aliens and more than 200 pounds of marijuana from Mexico. A Chicago ICE officer served time for taking bribes to stop deportation of two Iraqis.

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT: Homeland Security claims its convictions netted about $9 million in fines and recoveries, plus $106 million in administrative cost savings, but so far the Inspector General’s Office has declined to provide more information.
