Who: William Ayres, 80

What: A judge on Thursday denied a request from Ayres’ lawyers and family to release the accused child molester from Napa State Hospital.

How: Ayres, a prominent San Mateo child psychologist, faced life in prison after being charged five years ago with nine counts of performing lewd acts on seven boys during counseling sessions between 1991 and 1996. He also was accused of molesting more than 30 others on dates that are beyond the statute of limitations. However, as the legal proceedings dragged on and resulted in two mistrials, his mental health declined. Eventually, prosecutors conceded Ayres was not mentally fit to stand trial and recommended he be committed to a state hospital.
