ID made in first homicide of the year

A young man who became The City’s first homicide victim of the year was identified Thursday by the Medical Examiner’s Office as Jose Luis Hernandez Gomez, a city resident.

Gomez, 19, was found fatally shot on the sidewalk in the 500 block of Naples Street, in The City’s Excelsior district, at about 2:15 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Gomez, who suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police spokesman Sgt. Wilfred Williams said Gomez “had no apparent criminal record” and the motive for his killing remains unknown.

Gomez was identified through his family in Mexico, Williams said. He had lived in the United States for about two years and had lived in the Excelsior district for about three months.
