WHAT: In 168 U.S. cities, from December to February immigration agents teamed with state and local authorities to arrest 678 suspected street gang members connected to Mexico’s violent drug-smuggling cartels.
HOW: Members of 133 gangs were arrested and 447 of the suspects are now facing criminal charges. Another 231 people were held on administrative charges of illegal immigration.
WHY IT’S OUTRAGEOUS: Mexican cartels are battling each other and President Felipe Calderon’s drug offensive in a struggle that has killed more than 35,000 people. Their U.S gang affiliates have spread violent crimes and drug trafficking nationwide.
